Should You Use Granite? Performance and Cost Factors

A practical guide to evaluating should you use granite? performance and cost factors, including samples, specifications, fabrication and care.

“Should I use granite?” and “how much does granite cost per square metre?” are the two questions we hear most. To answer fairly, we need to look at both sides: granite has real strengths, but it also has limits worth knowing before you decide.

Where granite is strong

  • Hard and durable. Granite is a crystalline igneous rock with a dense structure and high hardness, usually around 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale. The surface resists abrasion and is not easily scratched in daily use.
  • Better heat tolerance than many materials. A granite worktop handles the normal heat of cooking. Even so, avoid repeatedly placing a pot straight from a strong flame onto the stone, because sudden thermal shock can still cause damage.
  • Many colours and patterns. Each stone has its own tone, so you can find a shade that suits each space.
  • Easy to clean. For stones with low water absorption, daily cleaning is straightforward, and polished stone often looks brighter the more it is cared for.
  • Repairable. Small chips can be treated with a specialist adhesive and re-polished, although the result depends on workmanship and the type of stone.

Limits to know about

  • Natural stone has some porosity. Worktops, dining tables and areas exposed to oil or coloured liquids should be treated and wiped clean promptly.
  • Slabs are heavy and need a flat base and correct support.
  • Colour and pattern change from slab to slab, so check the actual batch that will be installed.

Where granite is used

Granite has long been used indoors and outdoors: stair cladding, floors, pavements, facades, kitchen worktops, dining tables, bathroom cladding, garden furniture and memorials. Stairs are the most common application because they need a durable surface that is easy to keep clean.

The variety of colours and patterns also helps architects combine natural and engineered stone in the same project while keeping the result harmonious. Is granite expensive?

It depends on what you compare it with. Next to common finishing materials, granite usually costs more at the start, but many owners weigh its long service life and the fact that it rarely needs replacing.

Price is not set by the stone name alone. The main factors are: You can also refer to our guide on “Dimension-Stone Quarrying in India: Main Process Stages” to compare technical suitability for your installation.

  1. Type and origin. Imported or rare stones often cost differently from common domestic ones.
  2. Thickness and size. Thicker, larger slabs use more material and cost more to transport.
  3. Level of fabrication. Edge profiling, sink cut-outs, patterned cutting and book-matching all add labour.
  4. Surface finish. Polished, honed, flamed and leathered surfaces follow different processes.
  5. Transport and installation. These depend on distance, site location and how difficult the site is.

A price per square metre quoted without seeing drawings rarely reflects the final cost. The best approach is to send drawings or dimensions and site photographs so the quotation matches the actual scope.

Black Galaxy, green-toned Black Galaxy, Cambodian Black, Suoi Lau White and Indian Red are among the most requested. Each has its own character and price range, and you can read the detailed articles on our website. FABRICATION & MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Verified details on workshop CNC fabrication, shop-drawing submission, and stone material parameters at NHAN BAN STONE.

01 What stone fabrication specifications does NHAN BAN STONE provide for serviced apartments and residential projects in HCMC?

NHAN BAN STONE supplies raw stone slabs and provides workshop-based precision fabrication according to approved technical drawings: bridge saw cutting, undermount/overmount sink cutouts, edge profiling, and 45-degree mitered joints for kitchen countertops, vanities, stairs, and thresholds. Customers or contractors provide itemized dimension drawings, and finished components are fabricated on laser bridge saws and CNC machinery for collection at our workshop (District 12) or curbside delivery. Our scope focuses strictly on factory fabrication; we do not provide on-site measurement, installation, or construction services.

02 Which stone surface is recommended for rental property countertops balancing long-term durability and budget?

For serviced apartments and rental units with frequent cooking, dense Natural Granite varieties (such as Indian Black, Black Galaxy, or Suoi Lau White) are commonly preferred for their surface hardness, thermal resistance against hot cookware, and stain resistance against household liquids. Natural stone exhibits inherent variation in veining and tonal shade across quarries; NHAN BAN STONE recommends inspecting current batch slab samples prior to finalizing fabrication orders.

03 What specifications should customers prepare to receive an itemized fabrication quotation?

To receive a precise estimate, please prepare: (1) Detailed dimension drawings or cutting schedules (length, width, thickness); (2) Required edge profiles (beveled, bullnose, mitered) and cutout locations; (3) Specified stone code or preferred aesthetic tone; (4) Total quantity and requested completion timeframe at the workshop.

04 How are fabricated stone pieces treated and inspected prior to dispatch?

Following precision cutting on infrared bridge saws and CNC machines, components are verified against drawing dimensional tolerances. Prior to dispatch, cut edges and faces receive surface sealing using dedicated penetrating sealers for natural stone. Sealer longevity depends on specific mineral characteristics and post-handover care (prolonged contact with harsh acidic cleaners should be avoided).

05 Where is the warehouse located and how can customers inspect physical slabs?

Slabs and sample batches can be inspected directly at the NHAN BAN STONE Warehouse & Workshop: 1765 National Highway 1A, Tan Thoi Hiep Ward, District 12, Ho Chi Minh City (Hours: Monday – Saturday, 07:00 – 17:00). Alternatively, technical drawings can be sent via WhatsApp/Zalo (+84 909 221 083) for material suitability advice.
